Pelahatchie resident Willie Haven won the grand prize in the FCA US LLC 2019 National Sweepstakes on August 28. Haven is one of nearly 374,300 registrants to participate in the annual sweepstakes. As the winner, Haven received a $45,000 voucher to put toward his choice of any Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep®, RAM or FIAT brand vehicle. Almost immediately, Haven selected the RAM 1500 Classic Big Horn Edition pickup in metallic granite crystal. RAM was the title sponsor at the 2019 Dixie Na- tional Livestock Show and Rodeo, a stop on the RAM Rodeo Series, where Haven’s official registration into the giveaway took place. "I have to drive a good distance to my job working on an oil rig out of state, so this is a true blessing," said Willie Haven. The Rankin County School District (RCSD) is an "A" rated school district again and we are one of the TOP TEN districts in the state of Mississip- pi! Our students are continuing our 'tradition of excellence!" said Dr. Sue Townsend, Superintendent of Educa- tion. • The district grew 17 points from a 690/A to a 707/A (TOP TEN IN MS). • Graduation rate grew from 88.9 percent to 90.3 percent. • Reading proficiency grew from 53.1 to 55.4. • Math proficiency grew from 58.2 to 62.7. • Acceleration grew from 69.9 to 71.4. These are the students who are getting college credit with dual credit or Advanced Placement courses. • History proficiency grew from 70.8 to 72.3 • Math growth of lowest performing students grew from 59.7 to 61.8. "We are very proud of all our ac- complishments, but the test scores also showed a decrease of 6.2 points in En- glish Language Arts Low Performing Growth. We will increase our intention- al focus even more on this group to help them move to the next level," shared Dr. Townsend. "While we all know the RCSD has a multitude of "non-tested" accomplish- ments to celebrate daily, we also know that academic achievement and ac- countability are important and are used as a measuring stick for our schools," elaborated Dr. Townsend, "Our mission each day is to intentionally focus on empowering our students to reach their maximum potential in all areas. Our students continue to set high goals, and they strive to reach those goals." As the third largest school district in Mississippi, seven out of eight zones are A and B zones. One zone (Richland) is a B and C zone. The high school is a B and the two elementary schools re- ceived a C rating. All 11 of the RCSD high schools and middle schools are A's and B's while 11 elementary schools are A's, 3 B's, and 2 C's.
